As the long days of summer begin to fade, many of us naturally start thinking about getting back into a routine. Holidays, social events and warmer weather can all disrupt our usual healthy habits, leaving us feeling a little out of sync. I've certainly noticed that after a busy summer, my own routines can start to slip. As summer draws to a close, I find it's the perfect time to gently get back to the healthy habits that help me feel my best.

As the seasons begin to change, it's the perfect time to pause, reflect and make a few small changes that can have a positive impact on your health and wellbeing.

1. Reflect on What's Working

Before making changes, take a moment to think about what has gone well over the summer. Which healthy habits have you enjoyed? What would you like to continue? Building on existing successes is often more sustainable than starting from scratch.

2. Get Back to the Basics

If summer has meant irregular meals or too many treats, simply return to the basics. Aim for balanced meals with plenty of vegetables, protein, wholegrains and healthy fats to help support steady energy throughout the day and maintain healthy habits that last.

3. Prioritise Sleep

Longer evenings and warmer nights can affect our sleep. As the seasons begin to change, try to establish a calming bedtime routine and aim for consistent sleep and wake times where possible.

4. Move in a Way You Enjoy

Exercise doesn't have to be intense to be beneficial. A brisk walk, gardening, cycling, strength training or stretching all count. The best form of exercise is the one you'll keep doing as part of a healthy lifestyle.

5. Enjoy Seasonal Produce

Make the most of late summer fruit and vegetables such as tomatoes, blackberries, plums, sweetcorn and beetroot. Eating seasonally is a simple way to add colour, variety and valuable nutrients to your meals.

6. Spend Time Outdoors

Before the shorter autumn days arrive, enjoy as much natural daylight as you can. A walk, some gardening or even sitting outside with a cup of tea can help boost both your physical and mental wellbeing.

7. Aim for Progress, Not Perfection

Healthy living isn't about being perfect. Small, consistent habits have a far greater impact than short bursts of motivation. Be kind to yourself and remember that every positive choice counts.

A Gentle Fresh Start

As summer draws to a close, see it as an opportunity to reset rather than start over. A few simple changes now can help you establish healthy habits that support your wellbeing throughout autumn and beyond.
